Historical Site Visit
For this weeks blog entry, we were told to visit a historical place of our choice. I chose the St. Augustine Lighthouse located in St. Augustine, Florida. Here to the right of the screen is a picture of the beautiful white and black striped lighthouse.
Today, September 20th, around 3:30pm my brother and I decided to take a deeper look into the history of the St. Augustine Lighthouse. What better way to do that than by going there, and that's exactly what we did! When we arrived, we went inside and bought out tickets to go make the 219 step climb to the top of the lighthouse. Once we bought our tickets, we walked down a small trail to get to the entrance of the lighthouse. The climb only took us about 10 minutes, when we go to the top of the lighthouse it was beautiful! Weather was nice, very windy and partly cloudy. We spent majority of our time at the top admiring the beach on one side and The City of St. Augustine on the other. The lighthouse construction started 1871 and finished in 1874. According to Ron Word, "it took $280,000 to build the lighthouse( Word, St. Augustine Lighthouse, p.1)". I have been to the St. Augustine many times in my life, it is one of my favorite places to visit! Across from the lighthouse about 20ft away is the Keeper's House, as in the Keeper of the lighthouse. The Keeper of the lighthouse is a very important job, he/she maintains the lighthouse and makes sure it's operating to guide ships. I took many pictures and I am going to insert them down below! I had a great time exploring the St. Augustine Lighthouse with my brother! Overall, we spent about an hour exploring the lighthouse and it history it has to offer!
The first picture is of myself at the entrance of the lighthouse before we made the climb! The second picture is a selfie of my brother and I at the top of the lighthouse, and the third picture is in a mirror that the park has set up to be able to fit the entire lighthouse in the picture behind you! Super cool!
