"Blog entry of your choice"

Amazon.com: A Land Remembered eBook : Smith, Patrick D.,: Books

Hello all! Welcome back to my blog, so glad you're here!

For this week our blog entry is based off my choice, YAY!

I am going to be talking about our novel that we are reading in class: A Land Remembered written by Patrick D. Smith. The book was set in 1858 in the wilderness of Florida.

Let's talk about some of the carefully thought out characters of the novel.

First: We have the family man; Tobias. Tobias's immediate family consists of his wife, Emma and their son, Zech. Tobias is a very grounded man, and is portrayed as such in the novel. A kindhearted man, who treats everyone equally(since the very beginning of the novel). His family lives on a small farm in Florida, and he earns money for his family by selling cattle. *

Second: We have Emma. The supporting wife of Tobias and mother to Zech. Emma cooks for all the men, and I mean ALL. She never complains, which is a great look into her genuine personality. She causes no problems, everyone loves her.

Third: We have Zech, son of Tobias and Emma. A wild one to say the least. His personality shines bright and he is definitely the light in the family. He is very skillful when it comes to horse riding. It is clear to see that Zech as a true love for animals. He also loves to help Tobias with anything, he is always quick to ask if help is needed.

Fourth: We have Skillet; although he isn't immediate family he is treated like he is. Skillet was a slave, and Tobias hired him and immediately took him in as one of his own.  He helped Tobias catch and sell cattle. He was Tobias's other son.

The characters in this novel are so thought out as you can see they match each other very well. They each have different traits that make them, themselves and also a tight-knit family. They know at the end of the day all they have and need is each other.

Personally, Tobias is my favorite character and has been since the very beginning of the book. He is a humble, driven, family man. He moved his family from Georgia to the Florida wilderness to start a new life. He has run into many obstacles, but has not let any of them stop him. He treats everyone as an equal, which during this time was unheard of. In Chapter 3, Tobias comes across some Seminole Indians running from men on horses, and the book stated "These were the first Seminoles Tobias had ever seen since coming to Florida, although he had heard many tales of the Indian wars (Smith, P.19)". The Seminoles weren't even supposed to still be in Florida at the time, they were supposed to have moved west after the Indian Wars... but as you can see that didn't happen. They told Tobias they were starving and needed rest, undoubtedly Tobias took them back to his farm to eat and rest. Three men on horse back approached Tobias and the Seminole and were upset as they claimed the Seminole killed one of their marked calves; The Seminoles claimed it was unmarked which is why they killed it. Besides the point, Tobias was extremely brave and stood up for the Seminole which took the 3 men on horseback by shock because during this time Indians were not wanted at all in Florida. This is just one of many examples, as to why Tobias is my favorite character.

*(Unrelated to the novel, but for all those interested in astrology like me can definitely agree Tobias gives off major earth sign energy: Taurus, Capricorn, and Virgo)*
